Description: This item is pictured next to a pen for size reference. The closure (top portion that hinges) is spring-loaded. The item is of brass and was in the house I grew up in, which was about 100 years old. I remember seeing it in the cellar when I was 8-20 years old, which was about 56 years ago but I never knew what it was.

The brass ring was always with it and I suspect is part of whatever it is.
